COVID-19 outbreak closes Fort Erie daycare
Thursday May 21, 2020 by John Law The Niagara Falls Review
A COVID-19 outbreak has closed Fort Erie Regional Child Care Centre until June
Fort Erie Regional Child Care Centre was closed Tuesday and will remain closed until June 1 as a result of a COVID-19 outbreak.
Niagara Region spokesman Peter Criscione confirmed the closure in a written statement to The Niagara Falls Review Wednesday, saying that while Niagara Region Public Health believes "the risk to those who were exposed is low," an outbreak has been declared as per Ministry of Health guidelines.
He added that details of the outbreak cannot be shared publicly because of "privacy considerations."
The centre is one of several facilities made available for daycare for essential workers during the outbreak.
Criscione said the risk is considered low at the centre because of "proactive prevention measures in place at the facility."
"Nonetheless, we are taking precautionary measures to ensure no one else gets sick."
The closure will affect nine staff and 14 children, from toddler to school age.
Criscione said the period during which staff and children may have been exposed was between May 12 and 15.
"Public health will be following up with all staff and child contacts who may have been exposed."
