ZIFF, Louis - June 24, 1913 - June 3, 2012 - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, who passed away peacefully at Baycrest Hospital in Toronto, just weeks shy of his 99th birthday. Most of Louis's remarkably long and happy life was spent in Fort Erie, Ontario, where he left an indelible mark upon the town. Louis was predeceased by his cherished and formidable wife Stella, and is already missed by his son, Paul Ziff and his wife Anthea, his daughter Debbie Bondar, of Calgary, as well as his grandchildren Lauren and Jordan Bondar, his brother David Ziff, his brother-in-law Henry Fliess, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and old friends. An excel
lent student, Louis's debating skills served him well when he left Fort Erie to attend the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School, from which he graduated in 1941. Louis's legal career was interrupted by World War II, during which he volunteered for the Air Force and served as a radar mechanic overseas. Upon his return to Fort Erie in 1945, Louis started his law practice and also began what would be a six decade life of public service to the small town in which he was raised and would soon start his own family. He immediately became involved in civic life, first with the Board of Education that remained a primary interest during his lifetime. He then turned to town affairs and founded the Chamber of Commerce in 1947. The following year he ran for mayor and served two terms, during which - among many other accomplishments - he introduced postal service to Fort Erie. Louis's life took a fateful and delightful turn when he met his future bride during a trip to Northern Ontario one summer. He married his beloved Stella in 1950, and together they raised their two children while devoting the next 55 years to the town that they loved. Louis will forever be remembered as half of Fort Erie's 'first couple'. While building his law practice, for which he was eventually awarded the honour of Queen's Council, or Q.C., Louis remained an active participant in Education for over four decades. He was also a founder of the Friendship Festival, which has grown into an international annual event celebrating the good relations between Canada and the United States of America since the end of the War of 1812. Louis and Stella were dearly missed when they left Fort Erie and moved into Toronto's Hazelton Place Retirement Home in 2006. Sadly, Stella passed away in 2009 and Louis moved into Baycrest Geriatric Centre, where he lived for his remaining years. But love followed Louis wherever he went, and the family is forever grateful to the doctors and staff at Baycrest and the private caregivers - his devoted Sarah, Rebecca and Shermajal - who took such amazing care of him up to his very last moments. A funeral service was held in Calgary on Wed, June 6, at 11:30 am at the Chevra Kadisha Chapel (corner Highway 22X & 37 St. SW). For further info call 403-397 4276. Donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Society - Niagara Region, or in your own area.
